Q: Temple prof fired for refusing teaching?

A tenured Temple U professor was fired for refusing to teach what
he was assigned, according to some letters to the editor in last
Mon or Tues’s Philadelphia Inquirer.  I can’t find the original
story that those letters referred to, in spite of spending some
time searching on the net.

Would anyone know the story?  Thanks muchly, and if you email me,
I’ll post a summary.

Place to live in San Jose

I am moving to San Jose area soon
to attend San Jose State Univ.
Would anyone tell me (especiall bay
area student) where I could find
an apartment …. and price ranges

I am not rich. I am not picky.
As long as the apartment is in the
safe area (doesn’t have to be close
to school) will be OK for me.

Thank you for your kindness in advance.

SUNY Buffalo

It looks like I’ll be taking up a teaching position at SUNY Buffalo,
so I’m interested in getting as much general information and opinions
as possible on the university and the metro area.

Some sample questions: What is the student atmosphere like? In your
opinion, what are strong and weak features of the academic program?
Of the social atmosphere? Of the campus area? Of the city of Buffalo?

Any favorite or interesting on-campus hangouts? Any near-campus book-
stores, cafes, restaurants, etc. of note? Any favorite or interesting
locales elsewhere– central city, for example?

In particular, I’m interested in getting a glimpse of the gay scene
on campus and in the city. Is there a strong gay organization on campus?
Is homophobia a significant problem on campus? Are there lesbigay
 events on campus? When?

What is the gay scene like in Buffalo proper? Closeted? Small but open?
Any interesting "bohemian" neighborhoods with a significant gay presence?
Any interesting "bohemian" neighborhoods without a significant gay
presence? How’s the club & bar scene?

  Thanks for your input…..–John

Air conditioned dorms?

How many of you are at schools where your dorm rooms are air-conditioned?
As far as I see, it seems like the public schools are not ACed and the
privates are (for the most part).  Just a quick example, both NYU and
Columbia have air-conditioned dorm rooms while SUNY (Stony Brook,
Binghamton, Albany, and Buffalo) do not.

it my friends think I’m brain dead!
I even made my Girl-Friend watch it. She wasn’t impressed but hey, she
was willing to make snacks so we could spend quality time together.

*HELP* still haven't heard from UT Austin!!

It’s almost June, and the University of Texas at Austin has still not even
made a decision on my application. I tried calling their automated phone
system (TEX,) which said something to the effect of:
"We have received all documents required by the admissions committee. Once
we reach a decision, you will be notified by mail."
I will be trying to call them directly today (5/28) or tomorrow.

Since the other universities I’ve applied to (both in the US, BTW)
rejected me, this is really important to me. The alternative is compulsory
military service in Norway, which is something I am not looking forward
to.

If I *am* admitted, there’s a lot of paperwork to be done since I’m not
American, and I fear I won’t be able to get it all processed in time. This
includes securing a student visa, claiming my scholarship, and dealing
with insurance, airline tickets, postponement of military service and a
million other formalities. Also, I would like to have a week or two to
settle in Texas before classes start.

I would apprecciate any assistance I can get on this. If someone at the
University of Texas reads this, especially someone who works with
admissions, I would really like to know what is going on and hopefully get
some reassurance. I would also like to hear from other international
students who have been through this process, or are going through it this
year.

This is becoming an increasingly problematic issue. Today, I received a
draft notice from the Norwegian Air Force. In order to obtain a
postponement of service for educational reasons, I will need to submit an
application for postponement within two weeks. Also, in order to have any
chance of success with that application, I need to enclose proof of
enrollment at, or acceptance into, an educational institution. Proof which
I presently do not posess, and which I have no idea when (if ever) I will
receive.

My e-mail address is stian@radata, and my phone number is 011-47-32-733536.
I will also regularly be checking this group for replies.

The facts of my case:

I am an international applicant to the Department of Computer Science,
College of Natural Sciences, University of Texas at Austin. I’m a
Norwegian citizen, and have submitted the following test scores in
addition to my Norwegian high school diploma and two letters of
recommendation:

TOEFL: 653
SAT I: 1230 (620 Verbal, 610 Math)

I also submitted the following SAT II tests that are not required, because
they were required by two other universities I also applied to:

SAT II:Writing – 710
SAT II:Physics – 600
SAT II:Math IIc – 490

Any help would be much apprecciated

Thanks,
-Stian

PS
Sorry about the cross-post, but I really need all the help I can get.

Coed Showers

I have recently read in many newspapers that several colleges in the
United States offer dorms with non-gender or coed bathrooms and even
showers. I was surprised to see the colleges that offered this kind of
living area. I was wondering if anyone knew of any colleges that had coed
showers. How are these areas set up? Are they small bathrooms used only by
residents of part of the dorm, or are they large locker rooms similar to
ones in health clubs. I believe that there should be a publication that
warns parents and students of dorms of this nature.

Thanks

Who is this CFSKIP@aol.com

Well, she is a person working for USC. Obviously, what she wrote
here isn’t just her own ideas. =)

Her real name is Kay Ferdinandsen. She is currently a manager of
University of Computing Service of USC. First of all, she is not a
guy; second she is much older than the rest of readers on these
college-related newsgroups. mmm, shall I say that she is at least
in her 50′s! Yak!

Oh, here is her email address at USC.

  kf…@usc.edu

So you know what to do after you read this!
